Bond Paper GSM, Brightness and Printing Performance: A Philippine Buyer's Guide

If you buy bond paper in the Philippines, the box tells you more than the brand. The bond paper GSM, brightness, thickness and opacity together decide how the sheet feels, how it runs through your printers and how your documents look. This guide explains each specification in plain language. It also shows how they affect bond paper printing performance, and how to choose the right paper for schools, offices and printing businesses.
What is GSM in bond paper?
GSM means "grams per square metre". It is the weight of one square metre of a single sheet. A higher GSM means more paper fibre per sheet, which usually gives a thicker, stiffer and more opaque sheet. GSM is the standard way to compare paper weight internationally, so you will see it on every box of A4, Short, Long and A3 bond paper.
A quick way to picture it: one A4 sheet is 1/16 of a square metre. An 80 GSM A4 sheet weighs about 5 grams, and a ream of 500 sheets about 2.5 kg. At 70 GSM, the same ream weighs about 2.2 kg.
Bond paper weight guide: paper GSM chart
Use this paper GSM chart as a practical bond paper weight guide:
| GSM | Feel | Typical uses |
|---|---|---|
| 60–70 GSM | Light, economical | Drafts, worksheets, test papers, forms, high-volume photocopying |
| 75 GSM | Light-standard | General office printing in some markets |
| 80 GSM | Standard business weight | Reports, contracts, client documents, double-sided printing |
| 90–100 GSM | Heavier, premium feel | Presentations, proposals, CVs, colour-rich prints |
| 120–170 GSM | Light card | Flyers, brochures, covers |
| 200–300 GSM | Card | Certificates, business cards, folders |
For everyday office and school printing, the choice is almost always between 70 GSM and 80 GSM.
70 GSM vs 80 GSM bond paper: which is better?
Neither is "better" in general. Each is better for different jobs.
70 GSM bond paper uses
- Worksheets, quizzes and examination papers
- Internal memos, drafts and file copies
- Forms, billing statements and high-volume photocopying
- Any single-sided job where cost per page matters most
80 GSM bond paper uses
- Reports, proposals, contracts and client letters
- Double-sided printing, where opacity matters
- Documents that are filed long-term or handled often
- Corporate and export buyers who specify A4 80 GSM as standard
| 70 GSM | 80 GSM | |
|---|---|---|
| Ream weight (A4) | ≈ 2.2 kg | ≈ 2.5 kg |
| Opacity | Lower: more show-through | Higher: better for duplex |
| Feel | Light | Firmer, more substantial |
| A4 wholesale price (standard list) | ₱520 / box | ₱620 / box |
Does higher GSM mean better paper quality? Not necessarily. GSM measures weight, not quality. A well-made 70 GSM sheet with good formation and moisture control can run better than a poorly made 80 GSM sheet. Brand, pulp quality and storage matter as much as weight. Browse 70 GSM bond paper and 80 GSM bond paper.
Bond paper thickness and GSM (caliper)
Thickness, called caliper and measured in microns (µm), is related to GSM but not identical. Office 80 GSM paper is typically around 100–110 µm and 70 GSM around 90–95 µm. Two papers of the same GSM can still feel different, because fibre density and surface finishing vary. If your equipment manufacturer specifies a caliper range, check it against the paper you buy.
Paper brightness vs whiteness: what's the difference?
Paper brightness meaning: brightness measures how much blue light (at a wavelength of about 457 nm) a sheet reflects. It is usually given as ISO brightness on a 0–100 scale, or in some markets on a different scale where values can exceed 100. Whiteness measures how white the paper looks to the human eye across the whole visible spectrum. It is often given as CIE whiteness, where premium office papers commonly score in the 150s–160s.
- Brightness is about light reflection, and it affects contrast and how crisp text looks.
- Whiteness is about perceived colour, including warm (cream) versus cool (blue-white) tones.
Because the scales differ, compare like with like: ISO brightness with ISO brightness, and CIE whiteness with CIE whiteness. A bond paper brightness rating printed on the box is only meaningful if you know which scale it uses.
Is higher brightness always better?
No. Very bright, blue-white paper makes colour graphics and presentations pop. For long reading, or for documents that will be photocopied, standard brightness is perfectly fine and often easier on the eyes.
Paper opacity meaning: how opacity affects double-sided printing
Opacity is how much light passes through a sheet, in other words how much of the print on one side shows through to the other. It is given as a percentage, and higher is better. Typical office papers are around 88–90% opacity at 70 GSM and 91–94% at 80 GSM.
For bond paper for double-sided printing, opacity is the most important specification. Look for bond paper opacity for double sided printing of about 90% or more. If you print duplex to save paper, 80 GSM usually gives a cleaner result than 70 GSM. That's because text from the back is less visible, especially with heavy toner coverage or images.
What is the best GSM for inkjet and laser printers?
Most office laser printers, copiers and inkjet printers are designed for 70–90 GSM plain paper, so both 70 and 80 GSM work in standard trays.
Best bond paper for laser printers and copiers
- Choose a smooth multipurpose or copier paper with consistent moisture content. Laser printers use heat, and moist paper curls.
- Use 80 GSM for duplex jobs and high-coverage printing. 70 GSM is fine for single-sided, text-only volume.
- Premium brands such as Double A, Reflex Ultra White or Xerox Vitality are often chosen for high-speed copiers because of their consistent feeding.
Best bond paper for inkjet printers
- Inkjet ink is liquid. A slightly heavier sheet (80 GSM) reduces cockling (waviness) and show-through on colour prints.
- Higher brightness improves colour contrast.
- For photos and heavy colour, consider specialist inkjet paper. Standard bond paper is for text and light graphics.
The best GSM for printing is therefore 80 GSM for most mixed office use, and 70 GSM where cost per page is the priority.
Moisture and storage in the Philippines: why bond paper curls after printing
Why does bond paper curl after printing? Paper is hygroscopic: it absorbs moisture from the air. In humid Philippine conditions, sheets that have been exposed to the air take on moisture. The heat of a laser printer then dries one side faster than the other, which makes the sheet curl. Damp paper is also the most common cause of jams and double-feeds.
How to prevent paper jams from humidity
- Keep reams sealed in their wrapper until you load them.
- Store boxes on pallets, off the floor, away from walls, windows and air-conditioning drips.
- Don't leave paper sitting in printer trays over weekends in non-air-conditioned rooms.
- Let paper delivered from a hot truck or warehouse acclimatise to room conditions for about 24 hours before opening.
- Fan a ream before loading, and load it with the wrapper's "print side" arrow facing up, if one is printed.
Paper moisture storage Philippines checklist
Store paper indoors at normal room temperature, ideally in an air-conditioned or well-ventilated room, and rotate stock first-in, first-out. Good paper moisture storage in the Philippines, where humidity is high most of the year, often matters more to day-to-day performance than the brand you choose.
How to choose bond paper for schools and offices
- Split by use. Use 70 GSM for worksheets, tests and internal copies, and 80 GSM for reports, certificates and client documents.
- Match the size to your forms. Short for most school use, Long for government and legal forms, A4 for corporate and international documents. See the size guide.
- Pick a brand by equipment. High-speed copiers benefit from premium, consistent sheets, while desktop printers run well on standard brands.
- Buy in wholesale lots. Ordering 100 boxes or more, with assorted sizes, lowers your cost per box. Delivery is free from 150 boxes, you get 5% off from 250 boxes, and 10% off from 1,000 boxes.
- Store it properly so nothing is lost to humidity.
